The lack of an information network and huge frequency congestion are main challenges for extending the range of mobile communications, a process that will take 20 to 30 years, said Keeney, who heads the institute’s Future Cities Research Center. To start with, a global network of sensors will be needed to monitor the condition of city streets, roads and bridges. “There’s just no way around that, because you need to have a map of all of the infrastructure on the planet,” Keeney said. The problem is that so far the only way to create a global map is through satellites, which can only measure things like temperature, radiation and water levels. To create a global map of power lines, the best solution is to launch a thousand or more weather balloons, but those only provide an indication of the power grid and not exactly where it is located, he said. “Satellites can only do so much, and so the idea is to marry the network of the city with the network of the Earth, and so that’s where drones come in,” he said. About 80 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water and the remaining landmass is divided into continents, with the Middle East and Russia dominated by mountainous terrain. To create a map of power lines using drones, says Keeney, they need to fly in from different directions, scan the terrain and combine the data to create a map. “It’s going to look like 01e38acffe 1.
